Trust Without Borders

by | Oct 7, 2014 | Fear, Worry & Anxiety

Years ago, I stumbled upon a song that I quickly fell in love with – Oceans” by Hillsong. I would close my eyes and sing the lyrics day after day until one day, I actually listened to what I was professing.

“Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders.  Let me walk upon the waters, wherever You would call me.  Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander, and my faith will be made stronger, in the presence of my Savior.”

As the words came out of my mouth, my eyes shot wide open in a quizzical look of shock.

I’m glad nobody was around to take my picture in that moment; it would have been a funny one.

“Lead me where my trust is without borders?”

Hmmm.

If my trust is without borders, then that means no fear is present.  It means that I would trust God in any situation, anywhere at anytime.  There would be no more debate over whether I “felt” I could trust God; I simply would.

“Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander.”  That is a place where my feet don’t touch the ground, and I am not in control of where I go.

Is this something that I want?  After a few moments of pondering this idea and the vastness of what it could mean, I signed up.  I said, “Yes,” and sang on with more passion.

I want my trust to be without borders.  I want to walk where my feet don’t touch, and my faith will be made stronger in God’s presence.  If I am in His presence, fear is not present.  That is a good trade.

This is risky, but it’s a risk worth taking.  We all need something like this, something that pushes us out of “comfortable” and sometimes into downright “dangerous.”  Yet, this uncharted environment could be the highest level of safety that we have ever known.

It is the release of doing things in our own strength and being “us” centered. Instead, we would cling to a bigger, smarter, and more powerful God.  For this, we will have to sneak our feet into uncharted waters, let go of control, and say, “God, have your way.  Take me where you want me, and I will trust you. I know you love me, and you care more about me than anyone else.  What you want for me is best.”

But then there is a humbling that comes and says, “But when I have a hard time trusting God, help me even then.  Where I am weak, be my strength.”

God is a good Father and He knows where we are in our dreams, thoughts, and desires.  He might be ready for us to get off the tricycle and get on that bike—the one we dreamt of riding, but got too scared to try—that one.  But He promises to never leave us.  It is our privilege as His children to stay under His wings in safety. (Psalm 91)

Isaiah 46:11b says, “What I have said, that will I bring about; what I have planned, that will I do.”

Several years ago the Lord told me in my heart that I would fear nothing.  It’s a big promise.  It is wonderful and daunting.

This is a place He is taking me to and I have been on this journey for a while now.  It has not been comfortable all of the time, but in small increments, God has taken me to deeper waters and I can feel that my trust is growing.  Looking back at my life, I see pattern after pattern of mistrust, but as I look at the timeline of events in my life, I can see ever so gradual shifts into greater trust.  Some moments have been easy to free-fall into God, but most have been a stretch.

I pray for bravery for us all.  Courage to say “Yes,” when our mind says, “No.”  Do you feel like God has given you a promise?  Maybe it is a dream; maybe it is a state of being (health, finances, peace).  Hold on to God and cling to his promises.  Let Him fill you up to overflowing.  You cannot provide what you need for this journey, but He can and He is committed to you—more than anyone else.

Prayer:  Today I want you to say your own prayer.  What is on your heart?  Tell God.  He already knows and He cares.  Philippians 4:6 (NCV) says, “Do not worry about anything, but pray and ask God for everything you need, always giving thanks.” Ask Him to help you get on that bike and surround you with His love.
