How many times have you thought, “I’m so thirsty, I really should drink a glass of water,” but then you don’t? I do this all the time. I mean to, I really do, but life gets in the way, and before you know it, I’m chasing my kids around the house. My busy day continues, but so does my thirst, and by the end of the day, I’m one popcorn bowl away from having a cottonmouth.
Sometimes becoming overwhelmed develops just like an unquenched thirst.
The good news is that through Jesus we have constant access to the Father, who can feed us daily—even hourly. In this day and age, we need this constant access. We need it for flare-ups, problems, concerns, bouts of anger, moments of impatience, etc.
In John 7:37b-38, Jesus said, “If anyone is thirsty, he should come to me and drink! The one who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, will have streams of living water flow from deep within him.”
He wants us to come to Him when we are desperate, but He also longs for us to come to Him before we reach that point. Come and drink some water, then come again tomorrow and drink some more. If you are thirsty tonight, then drink twice. In fact, just plant your roots in God’s stream, full of water and enjoy constant supply and access to Him.
When we do this, we are “like a tree planted beside streams of water that bears its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.” (Psalm 1:1-3)
A tree that is planted by a river will always have a food source. It can drink and drink and drink—its roots ever satisfied.
Several years ago, God told me to feed on Him like a caterpillar feeds on a leaf. The caterpillar is never far from its food source. Then He brought to my mind John 8:32, “You WILL know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
Feeding on the Lord gives us greater access to the truth. Truth dispels lies giving us hope and confidence to move forward. Piece by piece, different areas of our lives become free.
We must plug into the true lifeline source—Jesus—and drink.
To drink is to absorb life from another source. I think we drink from God’s supply most effectively when we take our thoughts captive and command them to be silenced in Jesus’ name and sit in His presence. I’m not talking about church, I’m talking about the relationship you have with Christ in your home, your car, and your workplace, even while you’re balancing your accounts or changing a diaper.
In those moments, He is there. He promised never to leave you. Yes, He is there.
We can be like that tree that is so close to the stream; it can’t help but bear fruit. It can’t help but be successful and victorious. Why? Because we are alive in Christ and we get to feed from His constant provision.
If you need grace, drink it.
If you need peace, drink it.
If you need comfort, drink it.
If you need wisdom, drink it.
How to drink in His living water and truth:
- Read the word and ask Him to give you revelation
- Sing praise songs to Him from your own heart
- Thank Him for your blessings—from the littlest to the biggest
- Tell Him He is good and delight in His love for you
- Interact with Him like you would in a normal, healthy relationship
You have permission to relish in your God. Are you thirsty? Drink. Do you have heavy burdens? Give them to your Lord and drink his refreshing water.
God loves to fight our battles for us. He is enamored by us—imperfections and all. What a God we serve!
Where are your roots? Do you feel like they are in the air? Make a decision today to replant them in the water with Jesus.
Prayer: Lord, I choose today to plant myself in your stream of living water. Let your Holy Spirit flow through me, revealing truths to me and dispelling all lies. Let that truth break down fear and all ungodly strongholds that have tried to hold me down. I receive your freedom and your constant supply to my life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
“You take care of the earth and water it, making it rich and fertile. The river of God has plenty of water; it provides a bountiful harvest of grain, for you have ordered it so. You drench the plowed ground with rain, melting the clouds and leveling the ridges. You soften the earth with showers and bless its abundant crops. You crown the year with a bountiful harvest; even the hard pathways overflow with abundance. The grasslands of the wilderness become a lush pasture, and the hillsides blossom with joy. The meadows are clothed with flocks of sheep, and the valleys are carpeted with grain. They all shout and sing for joy!” (Psalm 65:9-13)
